Israel loved Joseph best of all his sons,
for he was the child of his old age;
and he had made him a long tunic.
When his brothers saw that their father loved him best of all his sons,
they hated him so much that they would not even greet him.
One day, when his brothers had gone
to pasture their father's flocks at Shechem,
Israel said to Joseph,
"Your brothers, you know, are tending our flocks at Shechem.
Get ready; I will send you to them."
So Joseph went after his brothers and caught up with them in Dothan.
They noticed him from a distance,
and before he came up to them, they plotted to kill him.
They said to one another: "Here comes that master dreamer!
Come on, let us kill him and throw him into one of the cisterns here;
we could say that a wild beast devoured him.
We shall then see what comes of his dreams."
When Reuben heard this,
he tried to save him from their hands, saying,
"We must not take his life.
Instead of shedding blood," he continued,
"just throw him into that cistern there in the desert;
but do not kill him outright."
His purpose was to rescue him from their hands
and return him to his father.
So when Joseph came up to them,
they stripped him of the long tunic he had on;
then they took him and threw him into the cistern,
which was empty and dry.
They then sat down to their meal.
Looking up, they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead,
their camels laden with gum, balm and resin
to be taken down to Egypt.
Judah said to his brothers:
"What is to be gained by killing our brother and concealing his blood?
Rather, let us sell him to these Ishmaelites,
instead of doing away with him ourselves.
After all, he is our brother, our own flesh."
His brothers agreed.
They sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver.

Gospel MT 21:33-43, 45-46
Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people:
"Hear another parable.
There was a landowner who planted a vineyard,
put a hedge around it,
dug a wine press in it, and built a tower.
Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey.
When vintage time drew near,
he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce.
But the tenants seized the servants and one they beat,
another they killed, and a third they stoned.
Again he sent other servants, more numerous than the first ones,
but they treated them in the same way.
Finally, he sent his son to them,
thinking, 'They will respect my son.'
But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another,
'This is the heir.
Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.'
They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.
What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?"
They answered him,
"He will put those wretched men to a wretched death
and lease his vineyard to other tenants
who will give him the produce at the proper times."
Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures:
The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
by the Lord has this been done,
and it is wonderful in our eyes?
Therefore, I say to you,
the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you
and given to a people that will produce its fruit."
When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables,
they knew that he was speaking about them.
And although they were attempting to arrest him,
they feared the crowds, for they regarded him as a prophet.

Gn 37, 3-4. 12-13. 17-28
Jacob amaba a José más que a todos sus demás hijos, porque lo había engendrado en la ancianidad. A él le había hecho una túnica de amplias mangas. Sus hermanos, viendo que lo amaba más que a todos ellos, llegaron a odiarlo, al grado de negarle la palabra.
Un día en que los hermanos de José llevaron a Siquem los rebaños de su padre, Jacob le dijo a José: "Tus hermanos apacientan mis rebaños en Siquem. Te voy a enviar allá". José fue entonces en busca de sus hermanos y los encontró en Dotán. Ellos lo vieron de lejos, y antes de que se les acercara, conspiraron contra él para matarlo y se decían unos a otros: "Ahí viene ese soñador. Démosle muerte; lo arrojaremos en un pozo y diremos que una fiera lo devoró. Vamos a ver de qué le sirven sus sueños".
Rubén oyó esto y trató de liberarlo de manos de sus hermanos, diciendo: "No le quiten la vida, ni derramen su sangre. Mejor arrójenlo en ese pozo que está en el desierto y no se manchen las manos". Eso lo decía para salvar a José y devolverlo a su padre.
Cuando llegó José a donde estaban sus hermanos, éstos lo despojaron de su túnica y lo arrojaron a un pozo sin agua. Luego se sentaron a comer, y levantando los ojos, vieron a lo lejos una caravana de ismaelitas, que venían de Galaad, con los camellos cargados de especias, resinas, bálsamo y láudano, y se dirigían a Egipto. Judá dijo entonces a sus hermanos: "¿Qué ganamos con matar a nuestro hermano y ocultar su muerte? Vendámoslo a los ismaelitas y no mancharemos nuestras manos. Después de todo, es nuestro hermano y de nuestra misma sangre". Y sus hermanos le hicieron caso. Sacaron a José del pozo y se lo vendieron a los mercaderes por veinticinco monedas de plata. Los mercaderes se llevaron a José a Egipto.

Cuando el Señor mandó el hambre sobre el país
y acabó con todas las cosechas,
ya había enviado por delante a un hombre:
a José, vendido como esclavo.

Le trabaron los pies con grilletes
y rodearon su cuerpo con cadenas,
hasta que se cumplió su predicción,

Evangelio
Mt 21, 33-43. 45-46
En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a los sumos sacerdotes y a los ancianos del pueblo esta parábola: "Había una vez un propietario que plantó un viñedo, lo rodeó con una cerca, cavó un lagar en él, construyó una torre para el vigilante y luego la alquiló a unos viñadores y se fue de viaje.
Llegado el tiempo de la vendimia, envió a sus criados para pedir su parte de los frutos a los viñadores; pero éstos se apoderaron de los criados, golpearon a uno, mataron a otro, y a otro más lo apedrearon. Envió de nuevo a otros criados, en mayor número que los primeros, y los trataron del mismo modo.
Por último, les mandó a su propio hijo, pensando: 'A mi hijo lo respetarán'. Pero cuando los viñadores lo vieron, se dijeron unos a otros: 'Éste es el heredero. Vamos a matarlo y nos quedaremos con su herencia'. Le echaron mano, lo sacaron del viñedo y lo mataron.
Ahora díganme: Cuando vuelva el dueño del viñedo, ¿qué hará con esos viñadores?" Ellos le respondieron: "Dará muerte terrible a esos desalmados y arrendará el viñedo a otros viñadores, que le entreguen los frutos a su tiempo".
Entonces Jesús les dijo: "¿No han leído nunca en la Escritura: La piedra que desecharon los constructores, es ahora la piedra angular. Esto es obra del Señor y es un prodigio admirable?
Por esta razón les digo que les será quitado a ustedes el Reino de Dios y se le dará a un pueblo que produzca sus frutos".
Al oír estas palabras, los sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos comprendieron que Jesús las decía por ellos y quisieron aprehenderlo, pero tuvieron miedo a la multitud, pues era tenido por un profeta.
