Tuesday of the Fifth Week of Lent

Reading NM 21:4-9
From Mount Hor the children of Israel set out on the Red Sea road,
to bypass the land of Edom.
But with their patience worn out by the journey,
the people complained against God and Moses,
"Why have you brought us up from Egypt to die in this desert,
where there is no food or water?
We are disgusted with this wretched food!"
In punishment the LORD sent among the people saraph serpents,
which bit the people so that many of them died.
Then the people came to Moses and said,
"We have sinned in complaining against the LORD and you.
Pray the LORD to take the serpents away from us."
So Moses prayed for the people, and the LORD said to Moses,
"Make a saraph and mount it on a pole,
and whoever looks at it after being bitten will live."
Moses accordingly made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole,
and whenever anyone who had been bitten by a serpent
looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.

Hide not your face from me

Verse Before The Gospel
The seed is the word of God, Christ is the sower;
all who come to him will live for ever.
Gospel JN 8:21-30
Jesus said to the Pharisees:
"I am going away and you will look for me,
but you will die in your sin.
Where I am going you cannot come."
So the Jews said,
"He is not going to kill himself, is he,
because he said, 'Where I am going you cannot come'?"
He said to them, "You belong to what is below,
I belong to what is above.
You belong to this world,
but I do not belong to this world.
That is why I told you that you will die in your sins.
For if you do not believe that I AM,
you will die in your sins."
So they said to him, "Who are you?"
Jesus said to them, "What I told you from the beginning.
I have much to say about you in condemnation.
But the one who sent me is true,
and what I heard from him I tell the world."
They did not realize that he was speaking to them of the Father.
So Jesus said to them,
"When you lift up the Son of Man,
then you will realize that I AM,
and that I do nothing on my own,
but I say only what the Father taught me.
The one who sent me is with me.
He has not left me alone,
because I always do what is pleasing to him."
Because he spoke this way, many came to believe in him.

Primera lectura
Nm 21, 4-9
En aquellos días, los hebreos salieron del monte Hor en dirección al Mar Rojo, para rodear el territorio de Edom; pero por el camino, el pueblo se impacientó y murmuró contra Dios y contra Moisés, diciendo: "¿Para qué nos sacaste de Egipto? ¿Para que muriéramos en el desierto? No tenemos pan ni agua y ya estamos hastiados de esta miserable comida".
Entonces envió Dios contra el pueblo serpientes venenosas, que los mordían, y murieron muchos israelitas. El pueblo acudió a Moisés y le dijo: "Hemos pecado al murmurar contra el Señor y contra ti. Ruega al Señor que aparte de nosotros las serpientes". Moisés rogó al Señor por el pueblo y el Señor le respondió: "Haz una serpiente como ésas y levántala en un palo. El que haya sido mordido por las serpientes y mire la que tú hagas, vivirá". Moisés hizo una serpiente de bronce y la levantó en un palo; y si alguno era mordido y miraba la serpiente de bronce, quedaba curado.
Salmo Responsorial
Salmo 101, 2-3. 16-18. 19-21
R. (2) Señor, escucha mi plegaria.
Señor, escucha mi plegaria;
que a tu presencia lleguen mis clamores.
El día de la desgracia.
Señor, no me abandones.
Cuando te invoque, escúchame
y enseguida respóndeme.
R. Señor, escucha mi plegaria.
Cuando el Señor reedifique a Sión
y aparezca glorioso,
cuando oiga el clamor del oprimido
y no se muestre a sus plegarias sordo.
Entonces al Señor temerán todos los pueblos
y su gloria verán los poderosos.

Esto se escribirá para el futuro
y alabará al Señor el pueblo nuevo,
porque el Señor, desde su altura santa,
ha mirado a la tierra desde el cielo,

La semilla es la palabra de Dios y el sembrador es Cristo;

Evangelio
Jn 8, 21-30
En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a los judíos: "Yo me voy y ustedes me buscarán, pero morirán en su pecado. A donde yo voy, ustedes no pueden venir". Dijeron entonces los judíos: "¿Estará pensando en suicidarse y por eso nos dice: 'A donde yo voy, ustedes no pueden venir'?" Pero Jesús añadió: "Ustedes son de aquí abajo y yo soy de allá arriba; ustedes son de este mundo, yo no soy de este mundo. Se lo acabo de decir: morirán en sus pecados, porque si no creen que Yo Soy, morirán en sus pecados".
Los judíos le preguntaron: "Entonces ¿quién eres tú?" Jesús les respondió: "Precisamente eso que les estoy diciendo. Mucho es lo que tengo que decir de ustedes y mucho que condenar. El que me ha enviado es veraz y lo que yo le he oído decir a él es lo que digo al mundo". Ellos no comprendieron que hablaba del Padre.
Jesús prosiguió: "Cuando hayan levantado al Hijo del hombre, entonces conocerán que Yo Soy y que no hago nada por mi cuenta; lo que el Padre me enseñó, eso digo. El que me envió está conmigo y no me ha dejado solo, porque yo hago siempre lo que a él le agrada". Después de decir estas palabras, muchos creyeron en él.
