Reading IS 58:1-9A
Thus says the Lord GOD:
Cry out full-throated and unsparingly,
lift up your voice like a trumpet blast;
Tell my people their wickedness,
and the house of Jacob their sins.
They seek me day after day,
and desire to know my ways,
Like a nation that has done what is just
and not abandoned the law of their God;
They ask me to declare what is due them,
pleased to gain access to God.
"Why do we fast, and you do not see it?
afflict ourselves, and you take no note of it?"
Lo, on your fast day you carry out your own pursuits,
and drive all your laborers.
Yes, your fast ends in quarreling and fighting,
striking with wicked claw.
Would that today you might fast
so as to make your voice heard on high!
Is this the manner of fasting I wish,
of keeping a day of penance:
That a man bow his head like a reed
and lie in sackcloth and ashes?
Do you call this a fast,
a day acceptable to the LORD?
This, rather, is the fasting that I wish:
releasing those bound unjustly,
untying the thongs of the yoke;
Setting free the oppressed,
breaking every yoke;
Sharing your bread with the hungry,
sheltering the oppressed and the homeless;
Clothing the naked when you see them,
and not turning your back on your own.
Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,
and your wound shall quickly be healed;
Your vindication shall go before you,
and the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.
Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer,
you shall cry for help, and he will say: Here I am!

Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness;
in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense.

The disciples of John approached Jesus and said,
"Why do we and the Pharisees fast much,
but your disciples do not fast?"
Jesus answered them, "Can the wedding guests mourn
as long as the bridegroom is with them?
The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them,
and then they will fast."

Is 58, 1-9
Esto dice el Señor:
"Clama a voz en cuello y que nadie te detenga.
Alza la voz como trompeta.
Denuncia a mi pueblo sus delitos,
a la casa de Jacob sus pecados.
Me buscan día a día y quieren conocer mi voluntad,
como si fuera un pueblo que practicara la justicia
y respetara los juicios de Dios.
Me piden sentencias justas
y anhelan tener cerca a Dios.
Me dicen todos los días:
'¿Para qué ayunamos, si tú no nos ves?
¿Para qué nos mortificamos, si no te das por enterado?'
Es que el día en que ustedes ayunan
encuentran la forma de hacer negocio
y oprimen a sus trabajadores.
Es que ayunan, sí, para luego reñir y disputar,
para dar puñetazos sin piedad.
Ése no es un ayuno que haga oír en el cielo la voz de ustedes.
¿Acaso es éste el ayuno que me agrada?
¿Es ésta la mortificación que yo acepto del hombre:
encorvar la cabeza como un junco
y acostarse sobre saco y ceniza?
¿A esto llaman ayuno y día agradable al Señor?
El ayuno que yo quiero de ti es éste, dice el Señor:
Que rompas las cadenas injustas
y levantes los yugos opresores;
que liberes a los oprimidos
y rompas todos los yugos;
que compartas tu pan con el hambriento
y abras tu casa al pobre sin techo;
que vistas al desnudo
y no des la espalda a tu propio hermano.
Entonces surgirá tu luz como la aurora
y cicatrizarán de prisa tus heridas;
te abrirá camino la justicia
y la gloria del Señor cerrará tu marcha.
Entonces clamarás al Señor y él te responderá;
lo llamarás y él te dirá: 'Aquí estoy' ".

Mt 9, 14-15
En aquel tiempo, los discípulos de Juan fueron a ver a Jesús y le preguntaron: "¿Por qué tus discípulos no ayunan, mientras nosotros y los fariseos sí ayunamos?" Jesús les respondió: "¿Cómo pueden llevar luto los amigos del esposo, mientras él está con ellos? Pero ya vendrán días en que les quitarán al esposo, y entonces sí ayunarán".
