Tuesday of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time

Reading SIR 35:1-12
To keep the law is a great oblation,
and he who observes the
commandments sacrifices a peace offering.
In works of charity one offers fine flour,
and when he gives alms he presents his sacrifice of praise.
To refrain from evil pleases the LORD,
and to avoid injustice is an atonement.
Appear not before the LORD empty-handed,
for all that you offer is in fulfillment of the precepts.
The just one's offering enriches the altar
and rises as a sweet odor before the Most High.
The just one's sacrifice is most pleasing,
nor will it ever be forgotten.
In a generous spirit pay homage to the LORD,
be not sparing of freewill gifts.
With each contribution show a cheerful countenance,
and pay your tithes in a spirit of joy.
Give to the Most High as he has given to you,
generously, according to your means.
For the LORD is one who always repays,
and he will give back to you sevenfold.
But offer no bribes, these he does not accept!
Trust not in sacrifice of the fruits of extortion.
For he is a God of justice,
who knows no favorites.

"Gather my faithful ones before me,
those who have made a covenant with me by sacrifice."

Gospel MK 10:28-31
Peter began to say to Jesus,
'We have given up everything and followed you."
Jesus said, "Amen, I say to you,
there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters
or mother or father or children or lands
for my sake and for the sake of the Gospel
who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age:
houses and brothers and sisters
and mothers and children and lands,
with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come.
But many that are first will be last, and the last will be first."
Commentary
Peter said to Jesus: "We have given up everything and followed you."
It is true, they had given up, not only possesions, but their families and their way of life, but interiorly they stilll squabbled over who was the most important and first places.
Like the disciples, we need to gaze in the eyes of Jesus and let Him lead.
Jesus does not give up on the disciples. He continues to teach them. He promises that they will receive "a hundred times more."
"A hundred times" is to say that life in Christ is superior beyond comparison.
"Brothers or sisters or mother or father or children"
Family is God´s gift that we must love and nurture. Giving it up means giving the greatest treasure on earth.
God wants us to love our families. What we give up is a way of loving that is not under God´s true love.
The best that can happen to spouses is that each loves God above all. Then they will receive God´s love through the other.
"With persecutions"
All Christians are persecuted so the question is not if but how and when.
Some are martyred, others are rejected, others lose business...
The only way to avoid persecution is by yielding to Satan, the world and the flesh.
"Many that are first will be last, and the last will be first."
Many who now are regarded as important and enjoy many favors will be shown to be the poorest. It was all a passing show. Many who today are insignificant and hidden are truly the first in the Kingdom. The truth will come to light soon and then it will be forever!

Primera lectura
Sir 35, 1-15
La ofrenda más grata al Señor
es la que ofrece aquel que cumple su ley.
El que guarda los mandamientos
ofrece un sacrificio de acción de gracias,
el que hace favores al prójimo ofrenda el mejor trigo,
el que da limosna ofrece un sacrificio de alabanza.
Apartarse del mal es darle gusto al Señor,
evitar la injusticia es sacrificio de expiación por el pecado;
no te presentes, pues, ante Dios con las manos vacías:
todo esto es mandato del Señor.
La ofrenda del justo enriquece el altar
y su aroma sube hasta el Altísimo.
La ofrenda del justo es agradable a Dios
y su memorial no será olvidado.
Honra al Señor con ánimo alegre
y no seas tacaño al pagarle tus primicias.
Haz tu ofrenda de buena gana
y santifica con gozo tus diezmos.
Dale al Altísimo según la medida en que él te ha dado a ti;
dale tan generosamente como puedas,
porque el Señor sabe recompensar
y te dará siete veces más.
No pienses en sobornar al Señor, porque él no recibirá tus dones,
ni confíes en la ofrenda de cosas mal habidas,
porque el Señor es un juez
que no se deja impresionar por apariencias.

Congreguen ante mí a los que sellaron
sobre el altar mi alianza.
Es Dios quien va a juzgar

Evangelio
Mc 10, 28-31
En aquel tiempo, Pedro le dijo a Jesús: "Señor, ya ves que nosotros lo hemos dejado todo para seguirte''.
Jesús le respondió: "Yo les aseguro: Nadie que haya dejado casa, o hermanos o hermanas, o padre o madre, o hijos o tierras, por mí y por el Evangelio, dejará de recibir, en esta vida, el ciento por uno en casas, hermanos y hermanas, madres e hijos y tierras, junto con persecuciones, y en el otro mundo, la vida eterna. Y muchos que ahora son los primeros serán los últimos, y muchos que ahora son los últimos, serán los primeros".
Comentario
Pedro dijo a Jesús: "Hemos dejado todo para seguirte".
Es cierto que habían renunciado a todo, no sólo a las posesiones, sino también a sus familias y su modo de vida, pero aún se disputaban los primeros puestos y querían ser importantes.
Como los discípulos, necesitamos mirar a los ojos de Jesús y dejarlo guiarnos.
Jesús no abandona a los discípulos, continúa enseñándoles. Les promete que recibirán "cien veces más".
"Cien veces" es decir que la vida en Cristo es superior más allá de comparación.
"Hermanos o hermanas o madre o padre o hijos"
La familia es un don de Dios que debemos amar y nutrir. "Dejarla" significa dejar el mayor tesoro en la tierra. Dios quiere que amemos a nuestras familias. Lo que "dejamos" es una forma de amar falsa que no está bajo el verdadero amor de Dios. Lo mejor que puede suceder a los cónyuges es que cada uno ama a Dios mas que al otro. Entonces el amor al otro será mucho mas.
"Con persecuciones"
Todos los cristianos son perseguidos. Lo que varía es el cómo y cuando.
Algunos son martirizados, otros rechazados, otros pierden negocios ...
La única manera de evitar la persecución es cediendo a Satanás, al mundo y a la carne.
"Muchos que son primeros serán últimos, y los últimos serán primeros."
Muchos que ahora se consideran importantes y disfrutan de muchos favores serán los más pobres. Todo es una apariencia pasajera. Muchos que hoy son insignificantes y despreciados son verdaderamente los primeros en el Reino. La verdad saldrá a la luz pronto y entonces será para siempre!
