Letter to Bartolomea, wife of Salviato da Lucca
Dearest sister in Christ. I, Catherine, servant of the servants of Christ, write in His Precious Blood, wanting you to feed and nourish yourself with the love of God as from the bosom of a sweet mother. No one, in fact, can live without this milk!
Whoever possesses the love of God, finds so much joy in it than any bitterness becomes sweet, and everything burden becomes light. Not at all surprising because, living in love, we live in God: "God is love, who is in love lives in God and God in him."
Living in God therefore one cannot have any bitterness, because God is infinite delight, sweetness and joy!
This is the reason why all the friends of God are always happy. Even sick, destitute, afflicted, suffering tribulation, persecuted, we are happy.
Even if all the languages that speak ill would criticize us, we would not mind, because we rejoice in it all and enjoy it because we live in God, our rest, and taste the milk of his love. As an obedient child obtains the milk of the mother's breast, so we, lovers of God, obtain the love of Jesus crucified, always following his footsteps and walking with Him by way of humiliation, penalties and injuries.
We do not seek happiness if not in Jesus, and flee from all sorts of glory that is not of the cross. Therefore embrace the crucified Jesus, raising to him the gaze of your desire! Consider the ardent love for you, that has brought Jesus to shed blood from every pore of His body. Embrace the crucified Jesus, lover and beloved, and in Him you will find true life, because He is God who became man. Let your heart and soul be ablaze in the fire of love drawn from Jesus nailed on the cross!
You then must be transformed into love, looking at God's love, that loved you so, not because he had any obligation towards you, but for pure gift, driven only by his ineffable love.
You shall have no other desire than to follow Jesus! As drunk with Love, you will not notice if you are alone or with others: Do not worry about anything, only to encounter Jesus and walk after Him!

Queridísima hermana en Jesús. Yo, Catalina, sierva de los siervos de Jesús, te escribo en su sangre preciosa, deseosa de que te alimentes y te nutras del amor de Dios como del seno de una dulce madre. ¡Nadie, de hecho, puede vivir sin esta leche!
Quien posee el amor de Dios, encuentra en ello tanta alegría que cualquier amargura se transforma en dulzura, y todo gran peso se vuelve ligero. No hay de qué sorprenderse porque, viviendo en la caridad, se vive en Dios: "Dios es amor; el que está en el amor habita en Dios y Dios habita en él".
Viviendo en Dios, por tanto, no se puede tener amargura alguna, porque ¡Dios es delicia, dulzura y alegría infinitas!
Es ésta la razón por la que los amigos de Dios son siempre felices. Aun enfermos, indigentes, afligidos, atribulados, perseguidos, nosotros estamos alegres.
Aun cuando todas las lenguas que hablan mal nos criticasen, no nos importaría, ya que de todo nos alegramos y disfrutamos, porque vivimos en Dios, nuestro reposo, y gustamos la leche de su amor. Como el niño obtiene la leche del seno de la madre, así nosotros, enamorados de Dios, obtenemos el amor de Jesús crucificado, siguiendo siempre sus huellas y caminando junto a Él por la via de las humillaciones, de las penas y de las injurias.
No buscamos la alegría si no en Jesús, y huimos de toda suerte de gloria que no sea la de la cruz. Por tanto ¡Abraza a Jesús crucificado, alzando hacia él la mirada de tu deseo! Considera el ardiente amor por tí, que ha llevado a Jesús a derramar sangre de cada poro de su cuerpo Abraza a Jesús crucificado, amante y amado, y en Él encontrarás la vida verdadera, porque es Dios que se ha hecho hombre. ¡Ardan tu corazón y tu alma por el fuego de amor obtenido de Jesús clavado en la cruz!
Debes, entonces, transformarte en amor, mirando al amor de Dios, que tanto te ha amado, no porque tuviera ninguna obligación para contigo, sino por pura donación, empujado sólo por su inefable amor.
¡No tendrás otro deseo que el de seguir a Jesús! Como embriagada por el Amor, no te darás ya cuenta de si te encuentras sola o en compañía: ¡No te preocupes por nada, sólo de encontrar a Jesús y caminar tras Él!
¡Corre, Bartolomea, y no te duermas nunca más, porque el tiempo corre y no espera ni un momento! Permanece en el dulce amor de Dios. Jesús dulce, Jesús amor.
